The Roots of the Ogasawara School of DecorumLatitude in Mind and the Spirit of ModestyFrom Learning Decorum: Spirit

Nagakiyo Minamoto, the first person to use the name Ogasawara in the Kamakura period, is the progenitor of the Ogasawara family.  During the Kamakura period, the Ogasawara School of Decorum focused on archery and horseback riding, which were realistic necessities for the warriors in Samurai class families.  However, when the world began to stabilize in the Muromachi period, people became to value movements around the castle, therefore, the seventh head, Sadamune Ogasawara set decorum.  After that, the Ogasawara School of Decorum came to be organized around 3 branches of “archery, horseback riding, and decorum.”  “Decorum” covers everything, not only the etiquettes for demeanor, but also knowledge about ceremonial occasions, exchanging presents and annual events that are needed in our daily lives.
In the past, the Ogasawara School of Decorum was not taught to the general public as it was handed down from the father to only one of his sons.  However, because the educational principle at Seitoku Gakuen and the Ogasawara School of Decorum has some thoughts in common, the thirty second head, Tadamune Ogasawara took on the instruction for decorum, which results in the decorum education of the present day.
